The Movement Academy
Getting Started
What if I have no prior teaching or fitness experience? Is the course suitable for beginners?
Certainly. Many students join Pilates certification without any prior teaching or fitness experience. While a teaching or fitness background is not required, we generally recommend having at least 6 months of regular Pilates practice before beginning your certification. Having personal experience with Pilates helps you better understand the exercises, movement principles, and the client experience, providing a stronger foundation for learning to teach. Balanced Body's curriculum is designed to build your knowledge progressively, enabling beginners to develop both technical understanding and teaching confidence through a structured combination of coursework, practice, observation, and mentoring.
Do I need anatomy knowledge before enrolling?
No. Prior anatomy knowledge is not required to enroll in the certification. Balanced Body incorporates anatomy education as part of the certification journey, beginning with Movement Principles (MP). This course combines anatomy with movement principles to help you understand how the body moves and how to apply that knowledge when teaching Pilates. If you have previously completed an anatomy course or hold relevant qualifications in fields such as physiotherapy, sports science, kinesiology, or exercise science, you may be eligible to bridge or receive credit for the Movement Principles prerequisite. Bridging eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you believe your previous education meets the requirements, please contact our education team with details of your qualifications, and we'll be happy to advise you on the next steps.
Must I complete Mat before Reformer and/or Apparatus?
Mat certification is not a prerequisite for Reformer certification. Many students choose to begin with Reformer, as it is one of the most widely used pieces of Pilates equipment in studios. Others start with Mat to build a strong foundation in Pilates principles and movement. For Apparatus training, students are required to complete the corresponding Mat and Reformer modules before joining each level.
(eg. To join Apparatus 1, students must first complete Mat 1 and Reformer 1. To join Apparatus 2, students must complete Mat 2 and Reformer 2.)
Since the Apparatus modules build upon the concepts and teaching skills introduced in both Mat and Reformer, completing these foundation modules first ensures students are prepared to learn and teach the remaining Pilates equipment. If you're unsure which pathway is right for you, our education team can help you choose the certification route that best aligns with your goals and teaching aspirations.
Which Pilates certification is best for beginners or career changers?
The best certification depends on your goals, learning style, and the type of instructor you aspire to become. For beginners and career changers, a programme that offers a structured curriculum, flexible scheduling, and comprehensive support can make the transition into teaching much smoother. Balanced Body's modular certification pathway is designed to build your knowledge progressively, allowing you to develop both technical skills and teaching confidence at your own pace.
If you're unsure which pathway is the best fit for you, our education team is happy to discuss your background, experience, and career aspirations to help you make an informed decision.

What is the Balanced Body style of Pilates? Is it Classical or Contemporary?
Balanced Body follows a Contemporary Pilates approach, while remaining rooted in the fundamental principles established by Joseph Pilates. The curriculum integrates traditional Pilates exercises with current research in movement science, biomechanics, anatomy, and motor learning. This evidence-informed approach equips instructors with the knowledge to adapt exercises for different bodies, abilities, goals, and movement needs, making Pilates more accessible and effective for a wide range of clients. Balanced Body encourages instructors to understand the purpose behind each exercise and apply sound movement principles to create safe, effective, and individualized programs. This flexibility makes it well suited for working with everyone from healthy individuals to athletes, older adults, and clients with specific movement considerations
What is the difference between the Balanced Body’s Anatomy course compared to otherschools?
Balanced Body anatomy uses a 3D, hands-on approach to learn about the human body. Instead of only learning from diagrams or memorization, students explore anatomy by working with a skeletal model and building an understanding of where major muscles attach, how they connect, and how they create movement. This multisensory way of learning helps students truly see and feel how the body works in motion, making anatomy more engaging, easier to understand, and easier to apply when teaching Pilates in real-life situations.

How much do Pilates instructors earn?
Pilates instructor income varies depending on studio, experience, specialization, and employment arrangement. Many new instructors begin with group classes or part-time teaching, while experienced instructors often expand into private sessions, specialised training, or full-time studio roles. Earnings grow with experience, teaching hours, and additional certifications that allow you to work with more specialised client groups.
Course Structure & Certification
Can I balance this certification with my full-time job?
Yes. Many of our students complete their certification while working full-time. Balanced Body's flexible, modular curriculum allows you to progress at a pace that fits your schedule. Most training modules are held on Friday afternoons, Saturdays, and Sundays, so many students only need to take a half-day of leave on Fridays while maintaining their regular work commitments. The certification is also designed to be completed over time, allowing you to spread out your coursework, self-practice, observation hours, practice teaching, mentoring, and examinations according to your availability.
Why does the certification require so many self-practice, observation and teaching hours?
The self-practice, observation, and practice teaching hours are an essential part of becoming a confident, competent, and effective Pilates instructor.
These hours allow you to reinforce what you've learned in class by experiencing the exercises in your own body, observing experienced instructors teach a variety of clients, and developing your own teaching skills through hands-on practice.
Teaching Pilates involves far more than knowing the exercises. It requires the ability to communicate clearly, adapt exercises to different bodies and abilities, and make informed decisions in real time. By completing these required hours, you'll build the confidence and practical experience needed to teach safely and effectively before sitting for your certification exam.
Why does Balanced Body require Movement Principles (MP) as a prerequisite? Can I skip MP if I have already completed anatomy training?
Movement Principles (MP) provides the foundation for the Balanced Body certification programme.
More than an anatomy course, it introduces the fundamental principles of human movement, biomechanics, postural alignment, and movement analysis that underpin the entire Pilates curriculum.
By establishing a common foundation, MP ensures that all students—regardless of their background—begin the certification with a shared understanding of how the body moves and how these principles apply to Pilates instruction.
If you have already completed an anatomy course or hold relevant qualifications in fields such as physiotherapy, sports science, kinesiology, or exercise science, you may be eligible to bridge or receive credit for the Movement Principles prerequisite.
Bridging eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you believe your previous education meets the requirements, please contact our education team with details of your qualifications, and we'll be happy to advise you on the next steps.
Comparison of the different Balanced Body certification pathways
Balanced Body offers several certification pathways to suit different career goals and levels of experience.
• Mat Certification – Ideal for those who want to teach mat-based Pilates classes and build a strong foundation in Pilates principles.
• Reformer Certification – Focuses on teaching the Reformer, one of the most widely used pieces of Pilates equipment in studios.
• Mat & Reformer Certification – Combines both certifications, providing a broader skill set and greater teaching opportunities.
• Comprehensive Certification – The most extensive pathway, covering Mat, Reformer, and the full range of Pilates apparatus, including the Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel, and Step Barrel. This pathway is recommended for those who want the most complete Pilates education and the flexibility to teach a wide variety of clients and settings.
What is the Bridging Programme?
The Bridging Programme is designed for instructors who have already completed a Pilates certification with another recognized training provider and wish to become Balanced Body certified.
Rather than repeating an entire certification, eligible instructors can build on their existing qualifications by learning the Balanced Body teaching approach, curriculum, and movement principles. The specific bridging requirements vary depending on your previous certification and experience.
If you're unsure which certification pathway or bridging option is right for you, our education team can review your background and recommend the most suitable route to achieving your goals
Career & Professional Growth
Teaching Pilates as a part-time vs full-time career.
Yes. One of the advantages of becoming a Pilates instructor is its flexibility. Many instructors begin by teaching part-time alongside their existing careers, gradually building experience and a client base before deciding whether to transition into full-time teaching. As your confidence and qualifications grow, you may choose to expand into private sessions, group classes, specialized populations, or even studio management and educator roles. Whether you teach part-time or full-time depends on your personal goals, lifestyle, and preferred work schedule. Balanced Body's modular certification also makes it possible to earn your qualification while continuing to work, allowing you to explore Pilates as a new career at your own pace.
What learning opportunities are available after certification?
Certification is just the beginning of your learning journey. As you gain teaching experience, you can continue to expand your knowledge through a wide range of continuing education courses, specialty workshops, and masterclasses.
At The Movement Academy, we regularly host continuing education workshops led by internationally recognised Balanced Body educators and movement specialists, helping you stay current, refine your teaching skills, and deepen your understanding of movement.
We also offer CIRCLE™ masterclasses, as well as workshops led by experienced instructors and industry experts covering a variety of niche topics. These learning opportunities allow you to explore specialised areas of interest, connect with the Pilates community, and continue growing as an instructor throughout your career.
Student Experience & Support
How supportive are the educators / admin team during the certification process?
Students can arrange mentoring sessions with our educators, where they can ask questions, receive feedback, clarify concepts, and get guidance on their teaching and certification requirements. These sessions are designed to help students build confidence and stay on track throughout the program. Our admin team supports the administrative side of your training, including course registrations, studio bookings, scheduling, and certification requirements.
